Shoulda, coulda, woulda sold the position on Friday when I posted about the viper I saw appearing on the ASX index. Though as always my real portfolios came first and it was only last night as I contemplated selling puts on XJO or finally opening a CFD account that it dawned on me I could actually sell an index holding in the Fusion Portfolio.
The 5,000 STW shares were bought October 7 at $42, so the portfolio is taking a small loss, $1.05 a share. I choose to sell that holding rather than the December 4 shares bought at $34.76 for tax reasons. I’ve now got a capital loss to offset against gains rather than having a fully taxed short term gain.
My selling is primarily a small step aside from the market. As I said the other day I like to put myself in the position to outperform the market. I’m giving myself a chance to do that with this sale.
I’d also like to have more cash available for individual equity purchases. This sale skyrockets the portfolio’s cash from 16% to 38%.
