Fund managers are generally happy to share their views. Their letters are often a great source of investment wisdom. While Buffett’s Berkshire Letters get the lion’s share of focus, many other fund managers provide valuable insights for investors.

I wrote about Howard Marks of Oaktree yestersay. That is his first letter that I have read and I look forward to reading more.

Where does Warren Buffett get his investment ideas?
Start with the As: The story goes that when a reporter asked Buffett where he gets his investment ideas, he replied that he reads annual reports and learns about every publicly traded company in the United States. “But there are 27,000 public companies,” the reporter responded. “Well,” replied Buffett, “start with the As.”

I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb to suggest that Buffett’s advice is not particularly helpful to the average investor.

Bookmarks or Favorites to those clinging to Bill’s apron strings.
Before starting this article I thought it would be easy to select the ten best investing sites I have bookmarked. I soon realised selecting the ten best from my thousands of bookmarks was going to be near impossible. Could you sort through all your bookmarked favorites?

Hence I’ve decided to list ten good websites across three categories; stock analysis, investment research and investing pick ‘n mix. These are good sites which every self directed investor should have in their favourite/bookmark list.

I hope you find these lists useful. If you know other great investing sites please leave a comment with a link.

Stock Analysis

• Seeking Alpha’s Transcripts Free transcripts of many quarterly calls.



• Big Charts Interactive Charts
  For a quick chart view I prefer StockCharts.com
  
• Reuters is excellent for a quick overview of a stock, though the site can be a tad slow.
• Morningstar graphically presents stock data I know a sensational online tool which returns all the M* charts for a company. A poster at The Motley Fool wrote and shared it with the community. Sorry to tease, if you really want it then you should be able to track it down at TMF.
• Edgar Online. It is always best to get the low down straight from the horses mouth. Edgar is the go to site for SEC filings. I’ll be blogging soon on how to get the best from Edgar Online.
• Earnings.com Provides an excellent quick view of past earnings, estimates, dividends and quarterly release dates.
• Info on insider trading from Form4Oracle
  
• Yahoo! Finance http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=AKAM and Google Finance http://finance.google.com/finance?q=AKAM&hl=en both deserve a mention. I regularly use both sites.
• Nasdaq Short Interest historical data If you’re interested in short data then use this longer term perspective rather than the latest short data available on Yahoo!
• The Options Industry Council (OIC) provides the best free options quotes around . Their quotes include implied volatility, the greeks and the theoretical option value.

Investment Research and Reading

• Good advice on stock investing for most investors.
• Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder Letters
  
• Damodaran Online is a fantastic resource maintained by Aswath Damodaran. He is a Professor of Finance and David Margolis Teaching Fellow at the Stern School of Business at New York University and has published five books, including Damodaran on Valuation, Investment Valuation and The Dark Side of Valuation.
  Damodaran is not a pretty site, but as Aswath states he has always “wanted the site to stand on its content”. On that score it is an outstanding success.
• Sloan School of Management at MIT and MIT Free Online Economics Course look to offer some fantastic free online investment material. I have yet to dig deep. From the Sloan School of Management these four courses appear very interesting; Business Analysis Using Financial Statements, Investments, Financial Accounting and Behavioral Economics and Finance



• Excellent summary of Seth Klarman’s Margin of Safety. The book is currently changing hands for around $1350, making this summary all the more valuable. I slipped a link to gurufocus.com in there as well, but it is another site worth an explicit mention.
• Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers I’ve been reading Robert Shiller’s work.
• A collection of papers on momentum.
• Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre about Jesse Livermore.
• How To Trade In Stocks by Jesse Livermore

Investing Pick ‘n Mix

Portfolio Software

• Free portfolio management Icarra.com
• Manifest Investing provides excellent value for their fee.
• The DRIP Investing Resource Center has an OK free portfolio spreadsheet and other Excel spreadsheets.

Day One: My Reading List

Or more accurately, ten excellent investment articles from my hard drive reading list, in no particular order.

• First up is a file I just downloaded from T & K Futures and Options Inc. Why do so many people lose money in commodity options? This article nee book is chock full of fantastic information that everyone should know before trading options and many of us already trading should brush up on. Not surprisingly, this topic is also Day One in Ten of the Biggest Mistakes in Option Trading.
• That is the one and only options article in this list and the following is the only straightforward advice for beginning investors. Richard Band shares What to tell Your New Graduate About Investing.
• From vinvesting.com Art of Stock Picking By Charlie Munger
  Key thoughts on wisdom, lattice work, multiple models. At first mathematics, then accounting, the importance of psychology, microeconomics, advantages of scale. I must re-read this!
• 21st Century Investor’s Economic Indicators book. This does what it says on the tin. Understanding the “Official” 17 Key Indicators and How They Move the U.S. Stock Market.
• Elliot Waves. Did I mention this was going to be a eclectic mix? It’s pure fusion. This is probably 122 pages more than you want to know about Elliot Waves so here is a one page primer.
• Fundamental Equity Analysis a Primer written by David Nincic as an advanced study project in Finance at The Wharton School.
• Phantom of the Pits. Another ebook I must re-read and yet another create example of lattice work within the investing world, or fusion investing for short. I’ve fused many mental models of traders into my investing style. The vast majority of traders core principles are sound across most investment styles.
  

  Most traders plan only for the probability side and that to them is always what they consider the winning side. This is the biggest mistake you can make in trading. You must plan for the losing side.

• Mark Sellers’ speech So You Want To Be The Next Warren Buffett? How’s Your Writing? is regularly and deservedly linked to. I last found it available at beearly.com
• The Super Investor of Graham-and-Doddsville by Warren E Buffett. A shorter version is available at Tilson Funds.
• The Original Turtle Trading Rules. Essential reading for any trader and full of good advice for all investors. From the importance of position sizing to the details behind this mechanical investment system.
