Eleven months ago I compared Hunter Hall Limited (HHL.AX) with Platinum Asset Management (PTM.AX) and found that HHL was a third of the relative price of PTM. Here’s my graph from then. Rechecking their statistics now, sees HHL at half the cost of the PTM, so the gap has closed, but HHL is still relatively attractive.

Hunter Hall International (HHL.AX) got a speeding ticket from the ASX on Monday due to their shares jumping 7.6% during the day. Like the ASX I wondered about the price increase and was mildly surprised I couldn’t find any news other than Platinum Asset Management’s announcement last Friday of an increase in their FUM. It’s good to see the ASX so on the ball, though I prefer them to focus on the bots which appears to be manipulating the price of many small to medium issues these days.

I’ll remain invested in Hunter Hall with a target of 25% annual returns over the next five years. The 2009 results were acceptable; however, I remained perplexed how a value focused funds management company could so resoundingly underperform a falling market. Though with Hunter Hall’s Funds excellent 3-10 performance the answer probably lies in my misconceptions about value outperforming in bear markets.

Hunter Hall Limited (HHL.AX) is the David of the Australian funds management industry to Platinum Asset Management Limited’s (PTM.AX) Goliath. While Hunter Hall is David both is terms of size and righteousness, I am primarily interested in which is the better investment. I may want David to win, but who should I plut my money on?
